What to do as a family in October
October gets dark early and wet outside: the evening belongs to the house again, and it has to be planned — otherwise it goes into phones in separate rooms.
There is still walking weather, though, and the end of the month brings Halloween and the autumn half-term. October comes out double: half at home, half around the city.
Three plans for October
Each one opens in full: the weeks, a project for everybody in the family, the goal of the month. Any of them can be rewritten for you and printed on two A4 sheets.
- Spider-Man MonthWhose Spider-Man turned out to be ours?Week 1 Tobey Maguire: three films, evening by eveningWeek 2 Andrew Garfield: both parts over a weekendWeek 3 Tom Holland: two parts on weeknightsWeek 4 Tom Holland: the finale with all threeWatch every Spider-Man film and pick the one that is ours.
Eight films back to back, three eras and one argument: whose Spider-Man is ours?
- Spooky MonthWhat came out scarier — the show, the game or our own face paint?Week 1 Decorating the flat: cobwebs, pumpkins, lightsWeek 2 Watching Wednesday — an episode an eveningWeek 3 Playing Reanimal, taking turnsWeek 4 Scary face paint: a costume rehearsalDecorate the house, invent our face paint and turn up at the school Halloween.
Cobwebs in the hallway, Wednesday every evening, a horror game and face paint.
- Know Your CityWhat did we see in our own city for the first time?Week 1 A museum we have never once walked intoWeek 2 An unfamiliar district: pick one, walk itWeek 3 The blank spots near home — walk to themWeek 4 A tour of the local ice-cream factoryGo where we have never been and see our own city the way visitors do.
A museum, an unfamiliar district, the blank spots near home and a factory tour.
How it looks on paper
Each plan prints on two A4 sheets. Open an example, change it for your family and print it — moods, progress and notes are filled in with a pen.
Build your own October
If none of them fits, build your own: the theme of the month, four weeks and a project each. It prints the same way — two pages, and onto the fridge.
Other families put their seasons up too — there are more on the showcase.
